Tips to get the most out of your faux leather

It’s no secret that having a hobby can cost you a fair amount of money, especially if you have a bit of an addiction to it. As creatives, we like to spend as little money as possible on things. And it’s possible to spend a lot on your hobbies and interests – especially when a lot of templates aren’t created to work with other templates. Here’s some tips to get the most out of your faux leather.

Try and create a couple of items at once

By creating a few items at once, you’re able to use design space to rotate templates to cut out as much as you can on piece of faux leather. Depending on where you get your faux leather from it’ll come as a 12inch by 12inch, A4 or A3 sheet. The majority of the leather that I work with is A4, so for that reason it’s important for me to try and get as much as I can from one sheet.

You can find my favourite templates here, but some here are some of the things I can fit on one sheet.

  • Snap clips, three medium bows and three small bows
  • Snap clips, one large bow and an envelope pouch
  • Headphone case and one large bow.
  • Two different bows and a headphone case

Click on the links above for tutorials on how to make each of them.

Find patterns that work with scrap fabric

This was a game changer for me, my go to is snap clips (purely because I don’t have pierced ears) but there are so many other options; felt embellishments, earrings, key fobs and bracelets.

These are the perfect way to get extra products from one sheet of faux leather. Even if you decide not to sell them they’re lovely freebee’s that technically cost you a few pence, you’d be throwing away the leather and you’ll need to factor in the snap clip cost or earring cost.

There are so many different options so take a look around and see what you can get, but here are my favourites.

Rotate, Rotate and Rotate

Originally Cricut had positioned the project below in a very different way. By rotating the purse, adding a bracelet and moving the bow elements, I was able to get three projects out of one sheet, where as originally I would have only got one purse out of the sheet without rotating.

That’s everything that I do to make sure you get the most out of Faux leather sheets.
